'Finding the McCains,' is an account of one Mississippi McCain’s 40 year odyssey to find his family in Ireland. Senator John McCain and his cousin, novelist Elizabethan Spencer, both include a short history of the Mississippi McCain family in their respective memoirs 'Faith of our Fathers' and 'Landscapes of the Heart.' This history is a romantic tale of Highland Scots who supported Mary Queen of Scots and who fled to Ireland after her downfall in 1568. The search for the McCains became a mystery story with clues, false turns, many adventures, and then ultimate success through Y chromosome DNA testing. In 2008 the McCains were reunited with their family that remained in Ireland, after 289 years of separation.
The McCain history includes people and events familiar to readers of Irish and Scottish history; Redshanks, Iníon Dubh, Mary Queen of Scots, the Earls of Argyll, the Ulster Migration, and the Scots-Irish, are all part of this family’s story. Faint memories of this past were told for generations in Mississippi and as the research progressed the facts behind these memories were uncovered. Another theme in the book is the Scots-Irish. Contemporary histories about the Scots-Irish present stereotyped and romanticized accounts of this dynamic group. 'Finding the McCains' reveals a more complex history and shows the cultural conflation common in Scots-Irish popular history.
'Finding the McCains' is also a genetic genealogy how-to guide for people of Irish and Scottish ancestry.

OK, husband of Margaret here; I wanted/read the book! I am a novice at genealogy using Y-chromosome DNA analysis but Barry McCain has been at this for many years and has learned the languages not only of his/our ancestors (Gaelic; Laggans) but of Y-DNA analysis for a fare-thee-well. Whereas Margaret and I went to Ulster (Northern Ireland, in part) last year for the first and only time, Barry has been all over the Emerald Isle for the past 40 years, having arrived there first as a long-haired hippie, interested in finding answers to the question "Who do you think you are?" (and, as he tells us in his story-telling approach to book-writing, he now knows; wow! Does he ever!). I got a great kick out of his episode of going up to the mountain-top with an Irish friend (who happens to believe in fairy-dust) and "The Hag" who supposedly haunts the ancient graveyard on top of that mountain, he thought, had not bothered him during this visit but, suddenly, he lost his footing, fell, and slid down the mountain, getting all banged up (and covered in sheep poo) in the process! Some things are real; others imagined. Guess that old Hag is pretty real to Barry's friend, eh? :c)Product details

Finding the McCains A Scots Irish Odyssey eBook Barry McCain Reviews
I just started the book.I’m finding that It’s not simply a book about the genealogy of one name, but a walk through the history of the times and places in which this ancient name traveled. Within are lovely b/w pics of the author’s relatives both distant and near. I highly recommend it to not only the those whose surname Caine, Cain, Kane, McKane/Cane, but those interested in local Irish/Scottish history.
Interesting. I am not a McCain but found the process and historical information really fascinating. It was difficult to follow in places, but I'm sure it would have been easier if it were my family he was talking about. His writing style is a bit glib at times, but I can excuse/ignore that. Will probably read it again. Definitely will use some of his sources and info from the bibliography. Worth the money and the time.
Great book. If you love history and genealogy you will of course enjoy this book. It was slightly heart breaking to discover I was not reading of my McKeans since there is no connection between William and Thomas the signer and these McCains. Makes you want to dig into your roots and travel and listen to more stories.
I found this book really helpful for my own genealogical research and quite interesting in general. I also really appreciate how Barry is not afraid to share some of the more personal and "mystical" (can't think of a better word right now) experiences he's had doing this kind of research. I imagine many of us who have begun to dig deeply into our own history and DNA can relate. I do wish he would now write a book on the technical side of analyzing Y-DNA results, but that's just me getting Uppity. Spending over 40 years researching is no small feat and putting all that history into this book is a multitude of cherries on the cake. Much gratitude.
If you love history then you will enjoy the journey up on opening this book. It will take you on the investigation of a family's migration from Scotland in the 15th century to the New World.
If you are a beginner genealogist, the application of DNA will confirm its necessity as a tool in discovering your ancestry.
If you are a McCain, this book is absolutely essential.
Thank you, Barry, for your research and your other book, The Laggan Redshanks. And thank you for your ongoing research on your Ulster website.
When I began reading this book, I could not put it down. It was like reading a suspense novel. I looked forward in my reading it to learn where this author would go next and what he would find in his quest. The book is rich in history, culture, art, music and language. They all come together in this odyssey of a young man who is determined to find his heritage and when he finally finds it, shows other how they too can find their history.
This book takes the reader on a journey through time. It was written well enough that I was able to live though the author’s experiences, as though they were mine, as he discovered his native countries and his family’s history during the journey. I enjoyed reading how he was able now to participate in and enjoy the culture of his heritage hundreds of years after his family had left Ireland.
One does not have to be a McCain to enjoy reading this book. The tales of the presence experienced by the author and of the past, revealed by the author is intriguing and interesting. Anyone will benefit from learning the manner in which the author found his people because it is amazing what he did and what he learned to accomplish the task. I am a McCain and because of this book, I too found my people.
I plan on giving all of my family a copy of this book.
This is not your typical family history log of names and dates - not even close. It is actually a primer on Scots-Irish history with a major dose of travelogue. Color me jealous of the author's command of "The Irish" and the expansion and correction of the typical Scots-Irish chronology. The DNA study actually seems to be a minor part of the book.
It's not an easy book to read, but very informative if you stick with it. The author uses a lot of Gaelic in family names and places, and the historically shifting naming conventions will hurt your head. If you are not a professional historian (I'm not), it will introduce you to many new terms and you will be challenged to keep it all straight. There's a fair amount of repetition, which actually helps as you are wading through the deep history and Gaelic.
